Adam Kashlak of the University of Cambridge has won the 2016 Young Statisticians Writing Competition, jointly organised by Significance and the Young Statisticians Section of the Royal Statistical Society.
Kashlak’s winning article is titled, ‘On the frequency of America in America’. In it, he analyses the growing usage of the word ‘America’ over 227 years’ worth of State of the Union addresses, and predicts how frequently it will be used by the next President of the United States.

Kashlak (pictured) is a PhD student in mathematical statistics at the University of Cambridge. Prior to this, he was a statistician for the US Department of Defense.
He presented a paper based on his article at the RSS Conference today, alongside fellow finalists Hakim-Moulay Dehbi of Imperial College London, and Anastasia Frantsuzova of the University of St Andrews.
